Overall Impacts

Overall Impacts of the CEE Trust Program in the Czech Republic:

Providing opportunities for fostering the role of NGOs in Czech society and cross-sectoral collaboration. Providing space for self-reflection in the nonprofit sector in order to identify challenges and opportunities.

  • The CEE Trust Program helped initiate widespread thinking and public debates about the state of civil society and the NGO sector in the Czech Republic, including matters such as legitimacy, transparency, ethics and the societal role of the various stakeholders. To illustrate the unprecedented scope, the efforts to identify "the blank spots" blocking or slowing down the development of the Czech nonprofit sector could be mentioned: over 100 responses were gathered from select politicians, representatives of regional governments and municipalities, academics, businesspeople, as well as numerous NGO representatives. Similarly, the Civicus report on the state of Czech civil society - based on varied tools from representative population surveys up to regional consultations - provided invaluable findings and data that will serve both domestic purposes and international comparative studies.
  • The CEE Trust Program helped stimulate and/or intensify collaboration between NGOs, academics and governments in legislative issues linked to civil society development and public participation. It contributed to the research of economic and other data on the NGO sector.
  • The CEE Trust Program substantially contributed to the establishment of specialized think tanks that would ensure further research, analyses and debates on the NGO sector, public participation and civil society at large.

Supporting organizational development of individual NGOs based on thorough strategic planning. Highlighting the importance, potentials and benefits of institutional capacity building.

  • For NGOs, the first decade after the fall of communism was characterized by what is known as "a project culture"- meaning the rather chaotic switching from one project to another, according to the funding available. The CEE Trust Program was a breakthrough in the sense that it directed NGOs toward a more systematic, planned organizational development and increased professionalization that over the long run would make them more viable and effective organizations.

Improving the infrastructure for NGOs and civic initiatives. Providing space and opportunity for professional growth and networking within the nonprofit sector:

  • The CEE Trust Program supported the development and implementation of projects targeted at strengthening the nonprofit sector at large. The opportunities and challenges ahead were identified through a broad participatory discussion process, and addressed through tailor-made projects.
  • The CEE Trust Program substantially contributed to the development of the expertise background for NGOs. It provided NGO experts and consultants with opportunities for their professional growth and equipped them with platforms to share information and experiences. It provided stimuli to NGOs to effectively utilize expert assistance in the pursuit of their mission.
  • Through organizing meetings and events, the CEE Trust Program has brought new energy to networking and experience-sharing, both within the country and in the CEE region.

Bridging two different periods in the nonprofit funding environment:

  • The CEE Trust Program guided Czech NGOs in their search for funding sources that would fill in the void left by the international funders who had withdrawn their support from the region - a search that has been crucial for their sustainability.
  • The CEE Trust Program highlighted the significant role played by community and regional foundations. It assisted them in their development as an increasingly important sources of funding for local NGO projects, as well as a powerful tool for promoting philanthropic thinking in local communities. The program significantly contributed to their institutional development and increased their fundraising skills. Among other things, it also successfully introduced and promoted the concept of challenge grants, with appreciable results achieved by the participating regional foundations.
  • In the period of the EU accession, the CEE Trust Program provided guidance and leadership to NGOs to help them adapt to the new environment. It provided information and know-how that opened the door to both EU funding and useful contacts to European NGO networks and other institutions. As a result, many participating NGOs succeeded in applying for EU funding and became models for others.
  • Thanks to the CEE Trust Program, Czech NGOs were provided with a wide range of assistance programs in order to increase their support base. Training, consultancy, case studies and publications dealt with a wide range of themes related to fundraising skills and sustainability efforts, such as fundraising strategies and plans, diversification of income, donor services, advanced fundraising tools and methods.
