Tvarožná Lhota - Service Trees, Mulberries and Us – for the promotion and utilization of old wood species in the Slovacko region

The aim of the project was to revive and develop the use of local natural products in the region of the White Carpathians - herbs, rare trees and shrubs. These products contribute not only to forming the landscape, but the also contribute to the development of environmentally friendly tourism, they help to revive local cultural traditions, and create favorable conditions for local business enterprises.

The project focused on the promotion of the rare and beautiful tree – the Service Tree (Sorbus domestica), which is sparsely spread through warmer locations in Moravia. Part of the project included year-round work on the cultivation of seedlings and educational excursions. In addition, the project also focused on the development of mulberry harvesting throughout Moravia and the promotion of mulberry products such as wood, brandy, marmalade and tea.

The promotion of these old wood species has been celebrated at the end of the project each year since 2001 with a social event called “The Service Tree Holiday," attended by the mayors of the towns and villages of the Slovácko region. The project was supported by a grant in the amount of 65.000 crowns.
