Lužná - “Lužná Intersection,” a project implemented by the Lokomotiva Lužná Sports Club.

There was a park near the northern section of town that had hosted dances and events in the past, but decades of neglect had so taken their toll that it could no longer be safely used. Some of Lužná’s residents, though, recognized the potential of this park: this could be where all Lužná’s residents could meet and the feeling of community could take root.

In 2005, members of a local club, Lokomotiva Lužná, learned of Via’s program that aims to improve community life in towns. Determined to take this opportunity to bridge the gap in the village, Lokomotiva Lužná decided to act: they wrote a proposal to rebuild the park and earned a grant from Via.

This grant was a catalyst in reviving community life in Lužná. Week by week, more people joined to participate in the project. Some worked directly on site, others raised additional funds, while still others baked sweets for community planning meetings. These planning meetings were integral to the park’s creation as the final design of the park took form based upon votes reflecting residents’ preferences.

The Lužná Intersection has again become a vibrant center of the town. Beyond the importance of the park is what it represents: Lužná’s residents took initiative by working together. This cooperation doesn’t only bridge a physical distance, but marks a path in building community.
