Supported projectsFrýdlant - The statue of St. Mary Magdalen in Větrov u FrýdlantProject: Restaurování sochy sv. Máří MagdalényOrganization: Město Frýdlant
Though the statue itself is thought to have been erected just over two hundred years ago, its base is much older, dating from the mid-1600’s. It is clear that both statue and base were sculpted with remarkable artistic feeling and accomplished workmanship. They are made from high quality stone that has held up well for several hundred years in the mountain climate. Time, though, has taken its inevitable toll. The St. Mary Magdelen statue has suffered both nature and vandalism; its shattered pieces lay on the ground after it was struck by a falling tree. The Frýdlant Monuments Board refused to forget the memory of those who created this work of art: the statue fragments were retrieved and stored for a time at which it could be repaired. Through a grant of 80,000 Kč from the Cultural Heritage Society, the St. Mary Magdelen statue is now undergoing restoration which will be completed by the end of 2006. Though the restoration process continues, St. Mary Magdelen has not divulged the secret of her origins. The history witnessed by her eyes may remain hidden, but she will soon once again stand as silent tribute in the forests of northern Bohemia.
