Ondřejov - “Reconstruction of the CAS 25 Fire Engine,” a project implemented by the Turkovice Volunteer Fire Brigade.

Turkovice’s fire engine is over forty years old and would be more at home in a museum than racing to an emergency. The cost of purchasing even a used firefighting vehicle is far beyond the Brigade’s means, but something had to be done to ensure the safety of the community. The Brigade decided that the only option was to modernize the existing engine themselves.

Since 2005, they’ve done so with great pride clocking over 1,000 volunteer hours of work on the engine. Soon into the project, it became apparent that their hard work alone was not enough to complete the repairs. The Fire Brigade sought a partner to help finance their efforts so that they could continue to provide for their community. That partner became the Via Foundation and the T-Mobile Fund.

Via awarded the Brigade CZK 70,000 to cover their costs and the engine is once again in top condition. Upgrading the engine’s motor and brakes alone reduced the Brigade’s response time by twenty percent. Who do you suppose may be more grateful for the repairs: the firefighters, or those whose home is engulfed in flames?
