Nové Hrady - “Equipping the Cuknštejn Fort Volunteer Center,” implemented by the Cuknštejn Civic Association.

The Cuknštejn Fort was saved from ruin when, in 2000, the government privatized the structure. Local residents established the Cuknštejn Civic Association with the goal of making the Fort freely accessible to the public, a task complicated by its remote location. It was soon clear that Association members would be unable to accomplish this alone. To realize the restoration of Cuknštejn Fort, the Association then built itself around the participation of volunteers who provided the energy demanded by the project.

Though the Association succeeded in attracting many volunteers, the rustic conditions and the lack of basic facilities at the fort deterred all but the hardiest individuals. To improve the situation and to make it easier for those interested to participate, the Association applied for and received support from the T-Mobile Employee Fund in 2007 to upgrade their facilities.

Thus began the project, “Equipping the Cuknštejn Fort Volunteer Center.” With the grant, second-hand furniture was purchased, repaired, and is now used to supply volunteers with a “home base” at the Fort. The Association also purchased a computer and printer, previously financially inaccessible, to publicize their efforts in an effort at drawing wider interest.

These improvements have already shown results: from across the Czech Republic, volunteers now arrive to spend weekends doing hard work in order to enjoy a well-deserved sense of satisfaction and the pace of restoration has increased dramatically.

Although much has already been accomplished in the preservation of the Cuknštejn Fort, even more work remains leaving the Cuknštejn Civic Association with only one question: would you like to spend a weekend in a picturesque locale working to make a tangible impact upon the future?
