Supported projectsKatovice - The “BEZva Katovice Project,” implemented by the Safe and Healthy Community Civic Association.Project: BEZva KatoviceOrganization: Bezpečná a zdravá komunita
The enthusiasm following 1989 inevitably faded into the realization of new challenges; the renewed community spirit became a casualty. Community associations, which had held such promise, became isolated and the reestablished traditions fell into disuse. Even social balls, a tradition that endured even through the communist regime, faced declining attendance. Residents feared that Katovice would become only a bedroom community to the larger town nearby, Strakonice. A group of residents recognized that something had to be done to re-engage Katovice’s residents in community life. Forming the BEZ Association, these individuals began by organizing family activities, including a kite-flying event and a children’s field day. BEZ was overwhelmed by the positive response to these events and saw this as a spark of hope. BEZ responded by developing “BEZva Katovice,” which is built around diverse activities including sports, trips to nearby historical sites, and the renewal of local traditions. BEZ successfully held a second annual kite-flying day; they supported residents organizing holiday celebrations; BEZ funded a marionette theater…and citizens didn’t simply attend these events. Some brought refreshments, others contributed to costs, while still others lent a helping hand. BEZ’s goal has been to strengthen the connection of residents to the local community. The high level of interest illustrates their success in fulfilling their goal through a fairly simple, yet content-diverse, project. Katovice residents have taken only the first step toward renewing community life, but the energy with which they took that step is a promise toward the future.
